You Deserve the Right to Good Health

I recently posted on Instagram the importance of fighting for your rights and your health. Not only for your physical health but for your mental health. Due to our society’s belief that “insurance companies should be ultimately trusted” a lot of people miss out on opportunities that could benefit them. 

So, I decided to create some easy and efficient tips for finding a therapist that fits you and your needs. Here are the steps: 

  1. Do your research: Psychology Today is like google for mental health professionals (therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc)
  2. Write a list of five of your favorite therapists from the Psychology Today list: just in case they’re booked you have options
  3. Check your insurance company to make sure the therapist you choose is in your network
  4. Email (DON’T DM) the therapists with your name, birthday, insurance company and a brief reason as to why you are seeking therapy (don’t go into too much detail even though the clinician’s email is HIPPA certified) and see if they have availabilities

Don’t be afraid to be an advocate for yourself. You and your health matters! And don’t allow anyone to forget it. Even if that includes your insurance provider. 

Also, if when you make it to the therapist’s office and you don’t think it’ll work out it’s more than okay to switch therapists. Don’t feel stuck in that position. People tend to get a negative connotation about therapy because they’re forcing themselves to see someone they don’t vibe with.
